Yeah, I've been having a hell of a time trying to Ascend, mainly because my PUGs have been, without exception, horrible. I'll have to give the henchies a go sometime...

The thing (at least for me) is that Guild Wars (or any other game, for that matter) isn't about "beating" the game as quickly or efficiently as possible. If you're just using henchmen you might as well play a single-player RPG, like Morrowind.

I can enjoy even the most chaotic and stupid PUGs. In fact, I have much more fun in really chaotic parties, than in missions that are done very streamlined and effective, and are over within 15 minutes. So what if I have to retry the same mission several time? When you party with real people, it's never the same experience....

A couple of notes on why henchmen beat PUGs hands down over 75% of the time:

1) Henchies focus fire, this makes a world of difference.
2) You ALWAYS know what a henchie will do, how they will respond, where they will move. You can plan effectively knowing how your troops will react.
3) Henchies will always wait for you to refill your energy.
4) Henchies will never leave group like children when they don't get their way.
5) Henchies allow you to get the loots!
6) Henchies know when to use certain skills and when not to. They also allow you to use your skills most effectively, unlike many PUGs who don't know anything other than their own skill set and don't understand who to attack when and where to stand while doing so. You can almost place your henchies right where you want them with proper movement on your end.
7) Henchies don't try to talk in the middle of a battle!

Maybe its just me, but I like PUGs. Even the ones that fail miserably. It is just a game, and I am fascinated in how the pop-psychology works within each group. Each PUG has a different collective character. I just find that fascinating.

Sure, its annoying when folks don't do what you want. Like blow the mission. But I lead by example... I ask leading questions to foster cooperation... I follow orders of the person in charge and I make a point of giving them positive reinforcement.... I praise warriors for a good tank... or Rangers & Mesmers with tying up the enemy... I crack jokes... I praise fellow monks for picking up my slack when I make a mistake... and I own up to my mistakes.

I've had great PUGs. I've had some terrible ones too. But the Great PUGs FAR and AWAY outnumber the bad... or even mediocre PUGS. I wonder why that is?

Hench don't go afk or leave the game in mid-mission.
